By-elections in three Assembly constituencies of West Bengal started today at 7 am. The three seats are Kharagpur in West Midnapore district, Kaliagunj of Uttar Dinajpur district and Karimpur of Nadia district.
In the last Assembly elections, Kharagpur was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dilip Ghosh, Kaliagunj was won by Congress and Karimpur was won by the Trinamool Congress’ Mohua Moitra.
Dilip Ghosh and Mohua Moitra have both contested Parliament elections subsequently, in 2019, and thus both the seats will now have fresh elections to choose new lawmakers. For Kaliagunj, the Congress lawmaker died a few months back.
If the performance of the last Lok Sabha polls is taken into consideration, Karimpur has a lead for the Trinamool Congress while Kaliagunj and Kharagpur both have lead for the BJP. However, it is to be seen how the Trinamool Congress and the BJP perform since the Lok Sabha elections in which the BJP had won 18 seats and the Trinamool, 22.
Twenty companies of Central paramilitary forces have been sent for the by-elections in three seats.
