Eco-friendly reusable cloth diapers are here

The birth of a baby can change a parent’s life completely. While many women have a hard time managing work and home after the birth of a child because they have to take greater responsibilities of home than their spouses, motherhood led Pallavi Utagi turn into a successful entrepreneur.

Here’s how.

Mumbai-based Pallavi became a mother in late 2013. Soon she was worried about what many parents face – her child had diaper rash problems caused by disposal diapers. She had to use five to six disposable diapers daily so that her toddler didn’t have rashes.

Utagi wondered how many like her would be doing the same, and the enormous amount of pollution the plastic content of the diapers were causing. How about reusable cloth diapers? It set her thinking.

Although there are some green diapers available internationally, these were expensive. And Utagi, who had experience of working in the pharmaceutical industry, started researching for cheaper options. She travelled to China in search of fabrics to make cloth diapers in India. After thorough research she was back in India and used her expertise, experience and research to make some diapers that she tried out on her son. That’s how SuperBottoms was born in 2015.

Utagi, in an email interview, said: “The diapers have a dry feel layer and are made of organic cotton with the power of absorb quickly. It also has a waterproof outer covering. The diapers are entirely made out of cloth. It is an Advanced Cloth Diaper.” She added, “These are fully washable even in machines and are reusable. Basically they are just like all other garments we use.” The diapers can be reused up to three years. Also, they are colourfully designed by artists to make them attractive like children’s clothes are meant to be.

This alternative diaper won’t causes rashes and it reflects in the sale. Utagi says proudly, “We see an increasingly positive response from parents for eco-friendly diapers especially because apart from being eco-friendly they are also skin friendly and significantly more economical too.”

The products are sold online.
