Angered and wounded with constant taunts from relatives over her dark complexion and inability to cook, a 28-year-old woman in Maharashtra’s Raigad district poisoned food at a house-warming party on Monday. Five people including four children died while 120 fell ill after consuming the food. The woman has been arrested.
Pradnya Survase allegedly mixed insecticides into the dal before serving it at the feast hosted by one of her relatives. A few hours after consuming the food, the guests began to vomit, complained of nausea and stomach ache and were subsequently taken to hospital. Police sent the food for forensic test which confirmed the presence of poison.
During interrogation, Survase’s replies made police suspicious. When she was further grilled, she broke down and told the police that she had been tortured by her husband, mother-in-law, sisters-in-law since her marriage (she got married two years back) for her dark complexion and inability to cook well. To avenge the grudge, she decided to add poison to the food.
Police said that charges of murder, attempt to murder had been slapped on her.
