Jhargram district is among the greener regions of West Bengal. It is a popular tourist destination known for its forests, ancient temples and palaces. Tribal dances, local fairs are also reasons for tourist attraction.
However, the town is fast losing its green cover thanks to construction boom, leading to congestion too. Under this backdrop, the district is taking measures to plant more trees. As part of the awareness for increasing the green cover, the district administration has taken the decision to plant 10,000 saplings in Jhargram town.
Ayesha Rani A, the district magistrate of Jhargram, announced this earlier in the week after the awareness walk, Sabujer Abhijan. She said that the programme has been taken up with the instruction of chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The rally to raise awareness on planting more trees moved around through the length and breadth of the town.
According to the DM, for every tree cut down in the town for the purpose of development projects, 10 trees will be planted. The plantation activities are part of the “Green Jhargram” project.
