Food delivery service platforms Swiggy and Zomato have started home delivery of alcohol in Kolkata and Siliguri.
The plan is to subsequently expand this elsewhere in West Bengal beyond Kolkata and Siliguri. When the lockdown was imposed to contain the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), alcohol shops remained closed for several weeks, and once the restrictions were lifted, it led to long queues outside the shops.
The app based and web-based delivery service platform officials realised the huge demand for home delivery as many customers wanted to avoid the crowd outside the shops where social distancing was not being maintained. It also meant waiting in long queues where rules of social distancing are being followed. Under this backdrop, there is a ready market of home delivery of alcohol.
Both the app based and web-based delivery platforms have mandatory age verification procedure – a government ID card has to be uploaded to confirm the age – before a customer is led to the next step of ordering. There is also a cap on the maximum order.
