A twenty-year old man, Posen Das, a resident of Renia Udayan Pally was arrested by Kolkata Police for sexually harassing a woman. According to a complaint filed with Bansdroni police station on May 18, the woman alleged in her complaint that an unknown person had entered her shop as a customer in Bansdroni around 6 pm when she was alone there. She told police that the man uttered indecent words, showed obscene gestures and outraged her modesty.
A case was filed under Section 509 of the Indian Penal Code which says, “whoever, intending to insult the modesty of any woman, utters any word, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard, or that such gesture or object shall be seen, by such woman, or intrudes upon the privacy of such woman, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.”
The woman had taken the person’s photograph, and police promptly tracked him down and arrested him.
