Outrage over BJP leader’s offensive remark on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

Stoking fresh controversy, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jayakaran Gupta has made an offensive remark on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra calling her a ‘skirt-wali bai’ referring to her attire, it was reported by NDTV.

Speaking at a political rally at Meerut, the BJP leader stated that Congress leaders who question the ‘achhe din’ (good days) ushered in by the Narendra Modi government cannot see that someone who wears skirts ‘is visiting temples in saris and those who avoid Ganga waters are treating it as holy’.

Being widely interpreted as a veiled reference to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the BJP leader has come in for sharp criticism over his sexist remarks. Backtracking from his words after facing criticism, Jayakaran Gupta has gone on to add that ‘many people are doing it’ and there is the need to see who ‘fits the description’, the NDTV report mentioned.

Earlier, BJP leader Harish Dwivedi had also remarked that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wore ‘jeans and top in Delhi’ but changed her attire to ‘sari and sindoor’ when she set out to campaign in rural areas. The Congress general secretary in charge of the party’s election campaign in Uttar Pradesh along with Jyotiraditya Scindia has been repeatedly subjected to  sexist comments ever since her debut in active politics.

BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya had described the political leaders being launched by the Congress to be “chocolate-faced” as the opposition party was faced with the dearth of strong leaders, he stated.

The Congress has also indulged in equally problematic sexist comments when talking about female leaders of the BJP.

Sajjan Singh Verma commented on how it was BJP’s ‘bad luck’ that they did not have ‘anyone as beautiful as Priyanka Gandhi’ and had to make do with Hema Malini. Union minister Smriti Irani has also been attacked with offensive words which target her as a woman in politics.
