Petrol prices in Mumbai crossed the Rs 85 per litre mark while Chennai and Kolkata recorded petrol price over Rs 80 a litre on Thursday.
Petrol price reached an all-time high at Rs 85.29 per litre in Mumbai, Rs 80.42 and Rs 80.12 per litre in Chennai and Kolkata respectively. The price per litre in Delhi was relatively low at Rs 77.42, according Indian Oil Corp website.
Former Financial Minister P. Chidambaram had tweeted on Wednesday that the government could reduce petrol price by Rs 25 a litre but they were not doing so.
Diesel prices also increased on Thursday with Mumbai and Chennai prices at Rs 72.96 and Rs 72.35 per litre respectively. The per litre price went up to Rs 71.08 and Rs 68.53 in Kolkata and Delhi respectively.
Union Oil & Natural Gas Resources minister Dharmendra Prasad, said that the government was trying to reduce the hike in fuel prices.
