In a shocking incident of caste discrimination and caste based segregation, police constable candidates appearing for medical examination at a district hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district were allegedly labelled with their caste on the chest.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday slammed the BJP-run Madhya Pradesh government for this.
Videos and photographs surfaced showing the candidates marked on their chest with “SC” (for Scheduled Caste), “ST” (for Scheduled Tribe) and “O” (for Other Backward Classes). The incident has sparked a major controversy in the state.
Dhar superintendent of police, Birendra Kumar Singh, who denied there was any official instruction to mark the candidates said, “We have initiated a probe into the incident and those found guilty will be punished.”
However, Director General of Police, Rishi Kumar Shukla told HT that while action had been initiated, there were no bad intentions behind the move as measurement for each category was different, and added that it should have been avoided.
