WhatsApp authorities said on Thursday that they will soon launch a test to limit forwarding of messages. This will apply to all users. The decision was taken after the Central government sought restrain on spread of rumours that have led to violent incidents in Assam and Karnataka, where fake news about children abductors was forwarded.
India is WhatsApp’s biggest market with more than 200 million users, where false incendiary messages have lead to mob lynching. As a matter of public relations and societal peace, the government asked for steps to prevent the circulation of false news and provocative messages.
In India, WhatsApp said the test will set a lower limit of five chats – individual or group chats – at a time and remove the quick forward button next to media messages, it was reported.
Indians rank highest in forwarding more messages, photos and videos than any other country in the world, according to WhatsApp. This step is likely to stop the flow of forwarded messages. WhatsApp also sought cooperation and partnership from the government and society in general to curb the spread of fake news, as a response to the Ministry of Information and Technology’s views.
WhatsApp also published advertisement in leading dailies to uproot the spread of misinformation, a first effort to fight the onslaught of fake news. It also said it was giving users control and information to be aware and has long-term public safety campaigns in plan.
