Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday claimed that his government had not done anything about the National Register of Citizens, and people who were protesting had been misguided by the Opposition’s lies.
“Has anything happened with the NRC yet? Lies are being spread,” Modi said at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally in Delhi on Sunday. “After my government came to power, from 2014 till now, let me tell the 130 crore citizens of this country, nowhere has the NRC word been discussed, been talked about. Only when the Supreme Court said, then we had to do it for Assam. What are they talking about? Spreading lies,” he said.
PM Modi’s words have been criticised by the Opposition parties, because Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly spoken about implementing NRC nationally.
Modi also mentioned “urban Naxals” and said that they were “spreading rumours that all Muslims will be sent to detention centres. I am amazed that even the educated people are asking what is a detention centre… these are all lies.”
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to say that people will decide who is right and who is wrong. “Whatever I said is there in public forum, whatever you said is there for people to judge. With #PM contradicting #HomeMinister publicly on Nationwide NRC, who is dividing fundamental idea of India? People will definitely decide who is right and who is wrong #IRejectCAA #IRejectNRC ”
