Partha Chatterjee brought back to Kolkata, faces ED interrogation

He was arrested in connection with the SSC scam & taken to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for medical check-up..

West Bengal Commerce & Industries and Information Technology minister Partha Chatterjee was brought back to Kolkata on Tuesday morning by the Enforcement Directorate a day after he was taken to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for medical check-up. Chatterjee was arrested by the ED on Saturday in connection with an alleged teacher recruitment in School Service Commission (SSC) scam.

Chatterjee’s close aide Arpita Mukherjee was arrested too on the same day following Rs 21.8 crore found in her Kolkata flat.

Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee face interrogation by ED officers at the agency’s CGO Complex office in Salt Lake. Doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar did not want to admit him saying that he was stable and his condition did not require admission as most of his ailments were “chronic” and needed prolonged medication. The ED took him to the neighbouring state after Chatterjee was admitted to the Bengal government-run SSKM Hospital, which the Central agency said was a ploy to avoid being questioned by officers conducting the probe.

Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday attacked the BJP on why the minister was taken to Odisha when there are “so many good hospitals in Bengal”. She alleged that the move was to use the Centre’s influence. Banerjee also alleged that there are attempts to dislodge the state government through Central probe agencies.

The ED has the custody of Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee till August 3.
