Three people including a village secretary and a village headman were killed and three other people seriously injured after a group of suspected cow smugglers thrashed them on Saturday in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district near the Bangladesh border. The police arrested six persons in this connection.
According to police, while the six persons were returning from an official meeting at around 2:30 pm, the suspected cow smugglers blocked their way at a place near Trangblang village and brutally assaulted them.
The village headman, village secretary and another member of the village died on the spot while the police managed to rescue other three members and admitted them to local hospital with serious injuries.
The police nabbed the main accused, his two brothers and their cousin along with two other suspected killers.
Earlier this week, the main accused was confronted by the village head when the former was trying to smuggle cattle to the neighbouring country. After the police rescued him, he lodged an FIR against the village head and other village members on Wednesday.
