Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated three new high-throughput laboratories of the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) in Kolkata, Mumbai and Noida through videoconference.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her counterparts in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh – Uddhav Thackeray and Yogi Adityanath respectively – were present at the inauguration.
The three testing facilities have been set up at the ICMR-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Kolkata, ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research, Noida and the ICMR-National Institute for Research in Reproductive Heath, Mumbai and will be able to conduct 10,000 samples a day.

Not only COVID-19, after the pandemic the labs will be useful for testing for Hepatitis B and C, dengue, HIV, tuberculosis and so on.
Mamata Banerjee said that the lab in Kolkata will be of great help (it will be run by the NICED) and requested the Centre to help set up some laboratories to be run by the state as well.
