HD Kumaraswamy likely to take oath, possibly on Wednesday.

HD Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) is scheduled to be sworn in as the next chief minister of Karnataka, possibly on Wednesday.

BS Yeddyurappa from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) resigned on the floor of the state Assembly and rushed to Raj Bhawan to submit his resignation letter to the Governor, without going for the floor test as they did not have 112 MLAs to form the government.

The Congress-JD(S) alliance will now get the opportunity to form the government, and they too have to prove on the floor of the Assembly that they have the number of MLAs required to form the government.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) leader Mayawati are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony among a host of other high-profile Congress leaders from New Delhi.

In last week’s election, the BJP had emerged as the single largest party by winning 104 seats, followed by the Congress with 78 seats and the JD(S) with 37 seats. The Congress and the JD(S) quickly formed an alliance and claimed to form the government together with 115 seats. However, the Governor called the BJP to form the government and prove within 15 days that they had the required number of MLAs for this. This led the Congress to file a plea in the Supreme Court. The apex had ordered a floor test on Saturday at 4 pm.
